Scriptural Guidance on Raising a Family, Engaged Parenting, and Core Family Values

Parenting is a journey that comes with its own set of challenges and joys. For those who seek spiritual grounding in this journey, the Bible provides timeless wisdom and guidance. While modern terms like "engaged parenting" or "primal parenting" may not be explicitly stated in the Bible, the essence of what these terms represent can be found in various scriptures. Below, I've listed passages from the English Standard Version (ESV) that touch on the different aspects of raising a family and maintaining strong family values.


Raising a Family

1. Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."

This Proverb highlights the long-term impact of early training and the importance of instilling good values and habits in your children from a young age.

2. Ephesians 6:4

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

This verse offers balanced advice to fathers, cautioning against being too harsh while also emphasizing the role of spiritual instruction.

3. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Here, the Bible stresses the role of parents as the first and constant teachers of spiritual principles, integrated into daily life.


Engaged Parenting

1. Colossians 3:21

"Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged."

Similar to Ephesians 6:4, this scripture warns against disheartening your children through unkind or unfair treatment.

2. Proverbs 29:17

"Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart."

This verse emphasizes the reciprocal benefits of proper discipline, leading to a more peaceful and joyful household.

3. Proverbs 13:24

"Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him."

The Bible is clear that loving discipline is essential for the well-being of the child.


General Family Values

1. Joshua 24:15

"...But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Joshua sets a decisive example, asserting that despite external influences, his household will be one that honors God.

2. 1 Timothy 5:8

"But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

Here, Paul talks about the crucial responsibility of providing for one's family, marking it as a key aspect of one’s faith.

3. Psalm 127:3-5

"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!"

This Psalm eloquently describes children as blessings and emphasizes the joy and strength they bring into our lives.
